</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt;background-image:initial;background-repeat:initial" align="center"></p><div style="text-align:center"><b><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">Loyola Heights, Quezon City</span></b></div><div style="text-align:center"><br></div><div style="text-align:left"><b>Abstract</b></div><div style="text-align:left"><br></div><div style="text-align:left">Religion is central to the lives of billions, a guiding force that influences not only individual spiritual belief, but public policy as well. With the Catholic bishops having concluded the Extraordinary Synod on the Family at the Vatican last October, Pulitzer Center senior editor Tom Hundley and Filipina journalist Ana Santos look at how the Catholic Church and the Media -- both local and international -- have defined the policy debate on gender issues in the Philippines including family planning, divorce, transnational families, and the global issue of abortion.<br></div><div style="text-align:left"><br></div><div style="text-align:left"><br></div><div style="text-align:left"><b>About the speakers<br></b></div><div style="text-align:left"><br></div><div style="text-align:left"><b>Tom Hundley</b>, Senior Editor of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Washington, D.C., has written extensively on gender issues in the Philippines for <i>The Washington Post</i>, the <i>Los Angeles Times</i>, and <i>Foreign Policy</i> magazine. A multi-awarded journalist, he served as a foreign correspondent for the <i>Chicago Tribune</i> for almost two decades. During that time he served as the Tribune&#39;s bureau chief in Jerusalem, Warsaw, Rome and London; and reported from more than 60 countries. He has covered three wars in the Persian Gulf, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the rise of Iran&#39;s post-revolutionary theocracy. His reporting activities have also included the break-up of Yugoslavia, Eastern Europe&#39;s transition from communism to democracy, Northern Ireland&#39;s transition from war to peace, and the Vatican&#39;s transition from John Paul II to Benedict XVI. After 36 years of international reporting, he joined the Pulitzer Center. A graduate of Georgetown University, he holds a master&#39;s degree in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania. He was also a National Endowment for the Humanities journalism fellow at the University of Michigan.</div><div style="text-align:left"><br></div><div style="text-align:left"><b>Ana Santos</b>, the Pulitzer Center&#39;s 2014 Persephone Miel Fellow, is a print and online journalist who writes on sex and relationships, women&#39;s issues, reproductive health rights, and HIV/AIDS awareness, among others. Her work has been published in <i>Rappler</i>, <i>IRIN NEWS</i> (the humanitarian news and analyses service of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs [UNOCHA]), <i>Marie Claire</i> (Philippines), <i>Women&#39;s Health</i>, <i>Metro Magazine</i>, and <i>Working Mom</i>, among others. She is also the Editorial Director of a website she founded in 2010, SexAndSensibilities.com. She obtained a Journalism degree from the University of the Philippines, Diliman and has been awarded media scholarships to attend the the 2009 lnternational Conference on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific in Bali, Indonesia; the East-West Center&#39;s Summer Institute 2010 for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights; and Women Deliver&#39;s 2010 global conference on &quot;Delivering Solutions for Girls and Women&quot; held in Washington, D.C.</div><p></p><div><br></div><div><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0.0001pt;font-family:arial,sans-serif">
