Communitails Inc., the Office of Guidance and Counseling, and the
Department of Biology invite the LS community, especially those mentoring
our college students, to:

*Healing Paws: Applying Pet Assisted Therapy (PAT) in a College Counseling
Setting*
Therapy dogs are trained to provide comfort and affection to people in
need. Colleges and universities are reaching out more to Animal Assisted
Therapy programs to provide support to students experiencing stress,
anxiety and loneliness. Studies have examined both emotional and physical
benefits of the human-animal bond, and research has found that petting an
animal can lower blood pressure and stress levels. This talk will include
information on the psychosocial benefits of PAT and the human-animal bond;
theory and research on animal-assisted interventions and mental health; and
clinical applications and techniques counselors can utilize while working
with a PAT team. An overview of the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA’s Pet
Assisted Therapy (PAT) Program will be provided, and additional information
will be shared regarding how PHS/SPCA Pet Assisted therapy teams are
utilized in college campus settings and mental health-related settings, in
general.
