Service learning is a "c*ourse-based, credit-bearing experience* in which
students (a) participate in an *organized service activity that meets
community needs *and (b) r*eflect on the service activity in such a way as
to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of
the discipline*, and an *enhanced sense of civic responsibilit*y (Bringle
and Hatcher, 1995). It is a * teaching and learning strategy that
integrated meaningful service *with instruction to *enrich the learning
experience*, t*each civic responsibility and strengthen communities*
(National Service Learning Clearinghouse, 2005),
It combines "rigorous *academic study with meaningful community service
that enhances students academic learning and achieves the aims of whole
person developmen*t.while addressing the* needs of the community*, and
requires a c*ooperative partnership among students, service agencies and
course instructors* "(Ma, Chan, Mak, Lu, 2018).
