*Gender and Sexual Politics in Political Transitions*
A lecture by Fernando Serrano-Amaya
The University of Sydney

The importance of gender and sexuality in armed conflicts and political
transitions is widely recognized. Still, gender and sexual are often seen
as secondary aspects in the analysis of sociopolitical conflicts. This
seminar intends to bring gender and sexual politics to the center of the
analysis. Using examples from Colombia and South Africa-countries not often
connected in the same research-the seminar will explore the role of
homophobic violence in the production of gender and sexual orders required
by warfare and deployed by armed groups. Yet those orders are uneven while
current conceptualisations are too limited to reach that complexity,
warranting further development of theory. The seminar will discuss the
experiences of those for whom gender, and sexual violence is embodied in
their everyday experiences amid armed conflict and political transitions,
looking at their struggles and strategies to become political actors.

The SY 2017-18 Lecture Series is convened by Dr. Jose Jowel Canuday and Dr.
Czarina Saloma-Akpedonu.
