ASEAN-Korea relations have seen leaps and bounds since the establishment of
official ties in 1989. The partnership was elevated to a Strategic
Partnership in 2010 and in 2014, the leaders held a Commemorative Summit to
celebrate the 25th anniversary of their relations in Busan. Realizing that
socio-cultural cooperation is most important in driving further political,
security and economic cooperation, the Korean government will be
inaugurating the ASEAN Culture House in Busan, the first institution
promoting ASEAN culture outside of ASEAN.

2017 is a commemorative year celebrating the 50th anniversary of ASEAN as
well as the ASEAN-ROK Cultural Exchange Year as designated by the leaders
of ASEAN and Korea. At this critical juncture, it is timely and meaningful
to discuss how the ASEAN-Korea relations have developed over the last few
decades, its current developments, and its future. Also, with the launching
of the ASEAN Community at the end of 2015, how does ASEAN and Korea see
each other, especially with Korea as a Dialogue Partner, and what kind of
support and mutual benefits do they share?

Furthermore, the Asia-Pacific region has been a playground for major power
rivalry for decades. With the new Trump Administration in the US, the rise
of China and weakening multilateralism, the global environment is full of
uncertainties. Amid these ambiguities, what direction should ASEAN and
Korea take to deepen their partnership and how should they move forward?

The key question is, what is ASEAN for Korea and what is Korea for ASEAN?
What is the underlying rationale for further developing their Strategic
Partnership into a more lasting and sustainable partnership?
