Abstract:

Drawing from Giddens’ structuration theory, the study argues that it is the
duality of the religious *studium* structures and seminarians’ agency,
occurring as a process of negotiated conversion, that influences the
seminarians’ continuance or departure from the religious *studium*. To
verify the argument, the case method was used to describe how the process
of seminarians’ negotiation of conversion to religious priesthood occurs,
and what its influence is on the continuance or departure of seminarians.
A religious *studium *of the Augustinian order served as the main setting
of the study while a diocesan seminary was also selected to provide a
comparison group of seminarians to help broaden the findings of the study.
The study finds that the seminaries through its formators, provide and
enforce the structures of conversion and set the stages of conversion that
seminarians negotiate with throughout their stay at the studium. The
seminarians do so by personalizing the seminary structures through the
satisfaction of their intersectional interests. Some are able to do so,
others fail. The continuance or departures of the seminarians is the result
of their success or failure in negotiating these structures of conversion
to priesthood. Moreover, what applies to religious seminarians also occurs,
on the whole, to diocesan seminarians.
