15 February 2017

The University community (with priority to Loyola Schools students,
however) is invited to the forum *SOCIAL JUSTICE, HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE 1987
CONSTITUTION: AN ALTERNATIVE LAW PRACTITIONER’S APPRAISAL*, with the Vice
President of the Republic of the Philippines,* Maria Leonor Gerona *
*Robredo*, as featured speaker. It will be held from *8:30 to 10:00am,
*on *Tuesday,
21 February 2017*, at the *Auditorium of the Ricardo and Dr. Rosita Leong
Hall, Loyola Heights campus*. (Registration outside the venue starts at
8:15am of that same day.)

Drawing particularly from her experiences as an alternative law
practitioner and her stints in public (government) service, the Vice
President will share aspects of her journey in and with the spirit and
letter of the social justice and human rights provisions of the 1987
Philippine Constitution. She may also discuss her appraisal of those
provisions (and of the Constitution in general). Opportunity for
question-and-answer will be afforded toward the end of the forum.

The Vice President's remarks will be preceded by those of Atty. Hazel
Lavitoria, current Executive Director of *Sentro ng Alternatibong Lingap
Panligal *(SALIGAN), who will begin the session by introducing the social
provisions of the Constitution and the work of SALIGAN, where Vice
President Robredo worked for an extended period of time.

This forum is presented in conjunction with the Loyola Schools' (LS)
conduct of an Alternative Class Day program dubbed *TALAB: Talakayang Alay
sa Bayan, *to reflect on pressing social issues of the present time and
those to be faced in the near future. *TALAB* aims to provide the community
with alternative learning experiences through interaction with invited
resource persons whose life-works and/or advocacies may awaken our
sensibilities and broaden our perspectives about social issues that affect
our very own lives. (Off-classroom activities will also be held.) As such,
please note that *priority in being part of the audience of this forum will
be given to LS students*.

The theme of this year's *TALAB* is the celebration of the 30th
anniversary of the 1987 Philippine Constitution. *TALAB* activities are
designed to deepen students' (and other University community sectors')
appreciation of the context of and impetus for the passage of the
Constitution and to provide assessments of its specific provisions.
