*Abstract*

On June 15, 2017, the American Heart Association (AHA) re-issued its
warning against saturated fat – and coconut oil in particular – “because
coconut oil increases LDL cholesterol, a cause of CVD, and has no known
offsetting favorable effects.” Why did the AHA Presidential Advisory make
such a strong warning against coconut oil? Has coconut oil really been
causing heart disease in the US?

To put things into perspective, the AHA was simply reiterating the
hypothesis that Ancel Keys first made in the 1950s that saturated fat
causes heart disease, a claim that he and others have not been able to
prove. Heart disease was the #1 American killer in 1961 when the AHA
started its campaign against saturated fat; heart disease has remained the
#1 American killer today and the AHA has maintained its position against
saturated fat. Meanwhile, obesity has become an epidemic among Americans.
Is there a connection?

This presentation will directly address the points made by the AHA against
saturated fat in general and coconut oil in particular in its Presidential
Advisory, and suggests motivations behind this campaign.

This presentation will be brought to the US as part of the Coconut Roadshow
that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Philippine Coconut
Authority (PCA) are organizing with the Philippine VCO industry in
September.
