ABSTRACT:
Light beam induced current (LBIC) is a non-destructive characterization
technique that uses a light source that scans a solar cell area to produce
current maps. The LBIC maps provide information on the quality of the solar
cells such as homogeneity, defects and presence of grain boundaries. This
work presents the design and development of an LBIC system that utilizes
thre wavelengths:450, 650 and 980 nm, to identify wavelength dependent
defects in solar cells. The  optimum step and spot size were also
determined. LBIC scans were performed using step sizes of 100, 50, 24, and
6 μm using 30 μm spot size, the smallest that the system can achieve. The
spot size were measured using the CCD camera and by performing edge
resolution method. Results show that the optimum step size for the system
was 24 μm and LBIC scans using 980 nm wavelength revealed more features
attributed as possible defects in solar cells. The LBIC system that was
developed can produce current maps down to 6 μm resolution providing a
better images of defects.
