Abstract:

This study looks at how women in the Philippine Navy (PN) make sense of
their structural location, roles, and emerging practices in a
male-dominated space. This study included 32 interviewees (men and women)
to examine how they embody, perform, and experience notions of masculinity
and femininity in the military. The research found that both men and women
rely on cultural expectations of gender to rationalize their roles and
locations in the PN. More importantly, women navigate the military by
employing their femininity to “negotiate” certain situations to advance
themselves as a minority. Men, in turn, are accepting of women in the
military yet employ actions that preserve the military’s masculine
characteristics. Towards the end, the actions of the PN’s members only
reinforce gender stereotypes and preserve the status quo of male dominance
in the PN. This study contributes to the understanding of how women, in
spite of their minority status in the military, are able to navigate the
structural constraints of a male-dominated space.
