Abstract:
This thesis attempts to intimate eroticism and the tropics to understand
the seemingly organic relationship between the two terms to understand why
they have been assumed to stand in for one another. On one hand, that the
tropical is erotic has already been assumed to be a given, but how
eroticism can be tropical is yet to be problematized. However, in the two
grooves of correspondence, the assumptions behind their interchangeability,
especially the former, needs to be theorized. In short, how is it that we
have come to terms with the tropics as being characterized by its being
erotic, and ancillary to this query is the inverse.

The primary concern of this thesis is to locate moments wherein eroticism
informs tropical representations to show the inextricability of the two key
concepts by way of Hiligaynon folk poetics. The goal is to arrive at the
axiomatic moment wherein an explanation is provided to purport that the
tropical is essentially erotic. In short, this thesis traces the genealogy
of tropical representations in Hiligaynon folk poetics, but I suggest that
one of the ways by which this traversal can be made possible is to inhabit
eroticism as a mode of knowing.
