SUBJECT:

Demise of GEORGES DE SCHRIJVER, SJ

________________________________________________________

The Loyola Schools Community is saddened by the sudden demise at 81 of
GEORGES DE SCHRIJVER, SJ, on Friday, 7th October 2016. Fr. Schrijver was
Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies at the
Catholic University of Leuven. From around 2001, he had been on a yearly
visiting professorship stint, for a semester, at the Department of
Philosophy, teaching Cosmology.

He was not just a teacher but also a beloved author at the Ateneo de Manila
University Press where, in 2015, he published Imagining the Creator God.
>From this book, we can get to know the mind and spirit of the man, a legacy
he has left with us in this community:

The Universe, in all its grandeur and complexity, has been attempted to be
understood by man since the early days of civilization. Throughout history,
various cosmologies were formulated, each more sophisticated than the last.
Imagining the Creator God: From Antiquity to Astrophysics explores the
creation of the universe through the perspectives of those who tried to
explore it before: From the Greek philosophers, the Jewish and Christian
traditions, to modern-day science. At the center of it all, the Creator can
be imagined; a generous Creator who shares his creativity with the rest of
creation.

We paid our respects to Fr. Schrijver at the wake for one night only:
Saturday, October 8, at 8pm, at the Jesuit Residence Chapel, Ateneo de
Manila University campus.

The funeral mass was on Sunday, October 9, at 2:30pm, Jesuit Residence
Chapel, Ateneo de Manila University campus, followed by the interment at
the Sacred Heart Novitiate, Novaliches, Quezon City – where he had wished
to be buried.

Rest in peace Fr. Schrijver! Thank you for having shared with the Ateneo
community your passion for teaching and writing.
