Mark Justiniani has long been interested wordplay.  The title of the
upcoming talk at the Ateneo Art Gallery calls to mind minefields, areas or
situations that are threatened by hidden problems, which could easily refer
to the work has he has been doing for the past couple of decades. But this
is *Mimefield,* so it is not as straightforward as it seems. It relates to
his more recent body of works  where imitation and illusion are part of the

Justiniani, who was considered a social realist artist in his early career
has in recent years created installations that utilize mirrors to create
illusions.  Peer into the one foot high box and you are confronted with a
seemingly bottomless pit filled with paper stacks, train tracks disappear
into a long dark tunnel that is in reality only about a meter deep.
Undoubtedly clever, that is not their point, they are visible
representation of the artist’s fascination with magic, mimicry and the
reality that is only hinted at by what we see. Fr. Jason Dy, sums it up “
Mark has continued to evolve as an artist because this and his social
realist work are all part of the continuum of his exploration of human
