Ateneo Art Awards 2016: Shortlisted Artists and Writers Announced

Established to honor Fernando Zobel (1924-1984), the founding benefactor of
the Ateneo Art Gallery, the Ateneo Art Awards – Fernando Zobel Prizes for
Visual Art has been the venue for recognizing exhibitions by emerging
artists in the country since 2004. The awards are given to Filipino visual
artists, below the age of 36, for outstanding works exhibited between 2 May
2015 to 1 May 2016.

In alphabetical order, the 12 artists shortlisted for the Fernando Zobel
Prizes for Visual Art are:

   - Buen Abrigo, *Line of Flight * (Blanc Gallery)
   - Martha Atienza, *Study in Reality No. 3 * (Silverlens Galleries)
   - Rocky Cajigan, *Museumified *(Blanc Gallery)

   - Nathalie Dagmang, *Dito sa may Ilog ng Tumana: A Sensory Investigation
   on the Contradictory Relationship of Barangay Tumana with the Marikina
   River* (UP CFA Thesis Show, 2015)
   - Romina Diaz, *Stagnant Energies* (Finale Art File)
   - Ian Fabro, *Hurt Anatomies *(Art Informal)
   - Ian Carlo Jaucian, *Emit No Evil* (1335 Mabini)
   - Leeroy New, *<3U-lolz* (Bencab Museum)
   - Jose Luis Singson, *Suspension of Disbelief *(1335 Mabini)
   - Ryan Villamael, *Behold A City *(Silverlens Galleries)
   - Liv Vinluan, * Cariño Brutal *(Finale Art File)
   - Paulo Vinluan, *See Waves* (Vargas Museum)

The winning artists are contenders for international residency grants
funded by the Ateneo Art Gallery and its partner institutions: La Trobe
University Visual Arts Centre in Bendigo, Australia, Artesan Gallery in
Singapore and Liverpool Hope University in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

The Ateneo Art Awards – Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prize for Art Criticism,
presented by the Ateneo Art Gallery, the Kalaw-Ledesma Foundation and The
Philippine Star, aims to foster critical public discussion about artworks,
exhibitions and art practices. The prize is awarded to the author that
submitted the best exhibition review. A list of museum exhibitions to be
reviewed was released with the call for entries. The winner is granted a
bi-monthly column in The Philippine Star for one year.

In alphabetical order, the 6 writers shortlisted for the Purita
Kalaw-Ledesma Prize for Art Criticism are:

   - Mariel Aglipay, *The River Runs Red*
   - Jasmine Cruz, *The I, the art and a millenial’s visual vocabulary*
   - Pristine de Leon, *Owning the Image: Exploring Lopez Museum’s
   political cartoons and the pleasures of resistance*
   - Par Patacsil, *Allegories of Ambivalence, Ascendancy and Dissent in
   Drawing the Lines*
   - Carlos Quijon, Jr., *Faced with the Abyss*
   - Dominic Zinampan, *Chambers of Reflection: A Critique on Mark
   Justiniani’s Reverb*

The works of all the shortlisted artists and writers will be exhibited at
the Grand Atrium of the Shangri-la Plaza, EDSA corner Shaw Boulevard, from
9-19 September 2016, and at the Ateneo Art Gallery from 10 October to 3
December 2016. Three artists and one writer will be awarded at the ceremony
to be held in the mall’s Grand Atrium on Thursday, 15 September.

The Ateneo Art Awards are presented by the Ateneo Art Gallery, Shangri-la
Plaza, The Philippine Star, Metro Society and Y-Style of The Philippine
