*Job Summary*

Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, General Physics
Laboratory Coordinator and Chair of the Department of Physics, the
Assistant Laboratory Technician I supports daily operations of the
department and performs tasks to maintain the efficient operation of the
department’s machine shop and laboratories.

*Job Responsibilities*

1.     Coordinates with physics laboratory users (faculty, students,
research assistants and graduate assistants) in preparing set-ups for
research activities

·     Sets up equipment and materials, as approved by faculty, to be used
in laboratory experiments

·        Checks availability of equipment and tests for safety of use

·        Assists in the fabrication of research tools at the machine shop

·        Allocates equipment and materials needed for experiments

·        Assists in ensuring that laboratory safety procedures are followed

2.     Assists faculty and researchers during classes and scheduled

·      Performs calibration of equipment based on standard protocols or
faculty instructions

·       Does basic interpretation of technical drawings

3.     Assists in the upkeep and overall maintenance of laboratories and
the machine shop

·     Assists in tracking consumables and hardware and makes requests for
purchases when needed

·  Assists in purchasing parts (electronic or mechanical) for repair as
approved by the General Physics Laboratory Coordinator or the Chair

·   Provides recommendations for laboratory improvements and presents
proposals with quotations when needed

·     Assists in monitoring the progress of laboratory renovation
activitiesand drafting related reports

·      Drafts incident reports detailing accidents and similar untoward
incidents in the laboratory

·   Facilitates and documents the lending of equipment and materials to
students and faculty, including inter-department situations

·       Ensures good working conditions in the machine shop through the
proper storage and maintenance of equipment and tools

·       Contacts service providers for repair and maintenance needs

4.     Assists the university community with its machining needs when
requested and not in conflict with other duties

5.     Performs other duties assigned by the General Physics Laboratory
Coordinator or the Chair.


   - Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a science-related course
   - TESDA certifications in machine shop technology or laboratory
   technology preferred
   - Two (2)years work experience in machining and electronics
   - Basic knowledge in using tools and equipment available at the machine
   - Familiarity with safety procedures related to laboratory and machine
   shop equipment
   - Good command of written and spoken English
   - Ability to anticipate needs in the laboratories and machine shop and
   to allocate funds for purchasing as necessary
