Kritika Kultura, the international refereed journal of language, literary,
and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila
University—in cooperation with AB Literature (English) Program, AdMU—will
host a lecture by Stephanie Faye Munyard titled “Trans-European
Negotiations of ‘Holocaust’ Memory: Cultural Memory in Translated French
Narratives of Nazi Persecution.” The lecture will be on Sept. 14, 2015,
4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Faber Hall Function Room, Ateneo de Manila
University.

Munyard’s abstract reads: “Following a brief consideration of the
appropriateness of the use of the term ‘Holocaust’ within discourses
surrounding memories of Nazi persecution, this paper will examine why
translation—in conjunction with related concerns such as transmission and
representation—has particular resonance today, specifically in relation to
the disappearance of historical witnesses of Nazi persecution.” As such,
her paper “aims to suggest firstly, that translation is a useful vehicle by
which the ineffable can be narrated. Further, through an analysis of the
German and English translations of Elie Wiesel’s *La Nuit*(1958) and Anna
Langfus’s *Le Sel et Le Soufre *(1960), it considers how the alterity of
narratives of Nazi persecution has, across time and across cultures, been
disturbed.”

Stephanie Faye Munyard completed her MA in Translation Studies at Cardiff
University (with Distinction) as well as a BA (Hons) in French and German
Studies at the University of Warwick. To date, she has presented at two
conferences: “Translating Holocaust Literature” at Trinity College, Dublin
in June 2013 and “Transnational Holocaust Memory” at Leeds (UK) in Jan.
2015 where she presented a paper titled “Re-vising *La Nuit*: Translation,
Reception and the Transnational Re-negotiations of Holocaust Memory.” She
is at present completing her first year as a PhD student at the School of
Modern Languages, Cardiff University. Her paper “Berman and Beyond: The
Trials of the Foreign and the Translation of Holocaust Literature” will be
published in *Translating Holocaust Literature*, edited by Peter Arnds of
Trinity College Dublin (forthcoming in 2015).
