*“Huk Sa Bagong Pamumuhay: Film as History and Propaganda” *a lecture by *Dr.
Maria Vina Lanzona* and the screening of *"Huk sa Bagong Pamumuhay"* on
Thursday, 10 September, 4:30 pm at the Rizal Library.

This event is part of the *Lamberto Avellana @ 100: Portrait of the Artist
as an Atenean, *a month-long celebration of the life and works of National
Artist for Film and Theatre Lamberto V. Avellana (Ateneo AB ’37, HS ’33).

*Dr. Maria Vina Lanzona* is an alumnus of the Ateneo de Manila University
where she finished her BA in Philosophy. After briefly working in the
government, she pursued her MA at the New School for Social Research in New
York City, and then her Ph.D. in Southeast Asian History in the University
of Wisconsin, Madison, under Alfred McCoy. Her first book, entitled *Amazons
of the Huk Rebellion: Gender, Sex and Revolution in the Philippines*,
combines her passion for studying history, women and revolution. For the
book, she interviewed more than 100 men and women who were involved in the
Huk rebellion, the subject of the movie that we will be seeing today. She
is an Associate Professor in History at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa,
and until recently, served as the Director of the Center for Philippine
Studies at UH. She is currently a Visiting Professor in the History
Department here, where she is also serving as the first ever Resident
Director of the Study Abroad Program between UH and Ateneo. She is very
happy to be back home in Manila and at the Ateneo.
