The Department of Physics and the School of Science and Engineering would
like to congratulate Ms. Socorro Rodrigo (4 BS Physics) on her being
selected as one of the youth delegates (the youngest in the group) for the
Philippine delegation to the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) in
Paris.

“COP21, also known as the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, will, for the
first time in over 20 years of UN negotiations, aim to achieve a legally
binding and universal agreement on climate, with the aim of keeping global
warming below 2°C.” The event begins on Nov 30 and ends on Dec 11.

Socorro will be part of the Ateneo delegation that will serve as support
for the negotiators of the Philippines.

Dean Tony La Viña of the Ateneo School of Government recruited Socorro
after observing that she won this year’s best student paper award at the
13th Philippine Association of Marine Science (PAMS) National Symposium on
Marine Science for her presentation on "The Mapping of Storm Surge-Prone
Areas Along Leyte Gulf." (which is her thesis work). According to Dean La
Viña, specific and concrete climate studies like Socorro’s, that give input
about local implications of climate events, are relevant at events like the
COP21.

We congratulate Socorro once again with the anticipation that this will be
her initiation as one of the climate champions of her generation for our
country.
