Kritika Kultura, the international refereed journal of language, literary,
and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila
University will host a lecture by Anna Katrina Gutierrez titled “When
Mermaids Speak with Asian Voices: Creating Glocal Identities through the
Blending of H.C. Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid,’ Severino Reyes’s Lola
Basyang, and *My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho*.” This event will be on Nov. 23,
2015, 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Faura AVR, 1/f Faura Hall, Ateneo de
Manila University.

Gutierrez claims: “Mermaids represent the wondrous strangeness of
hybridity.” She explains that “in Eastern and Western traditions, stories
of mermaids crossing into the human world explore the consequences of
boundary crossing and interrogate notions of subjectivity. Asian retellings
and reversions that combine Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’
with local and regional folklore—such as Severino Reyes’s [Lola Basyang]
‘Ang Sirena sa Uli-Uli ng Ilog Pasig’ and the koreanovela *My Girlfriend is
a Gumiho—*bring to the fore the emergence of new hybrid identities from the
dialectic between global signs and local meanings, and the mixing of
Eastern and Western narratives of Self and Other.” Using as framework
Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner’s theory of “conceptual blending” and
Roland Robertson’s theory of “glocalization,” she will reveal how “the
dialectic between global and local and Eastern and Western representations
of subject and place simultaneously strengthens national identity as well
as gives it a global dimension, extending its relevance to the world.”

Anna Katrina Gutierrez teaches English and Literature at the Ateneo de
Manila University. Following a PhD in Children’s Literature at Macquarie
University in Sydney, she has been granted fellowships at several
international research centers, including the Hans Christian Andersen
Centre, the Swedish Institute for Children’s Books, and the International
Youth Library in Munich. Her publications include articles in *International
Research in Children’s Literature *and the *Journal of Graphic Novels and
Comics. *Her doctoral thesis was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Commendation
and is the basis of her book on glocalization, conceptual blending, and
fairy tale and folktale retellings, forthcoming from John Benjamins
Publishing Company*. *She has worked as a project editor for Adarna House,
is a freelance editor and writer for Tahanan Books, and is a consultant for
Lantana Publishing, a UK-based children’s publishing house.
