*A lecture **by Dr. Nicole Revel, PhD.*

*Director of Research Emeritus, Centre National de la Recherche

*Éco-anthropologie et Ethnobiologie (MNHN) site du Musée de l’Homme,
Paris, France*

Organized by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the
Department of Philosophy, Loyola Schools

*Tuesday, 10 November 2015*

*4.30-6.00 PM*

*Pardo de Tavera Room, Rizal Library*

By way of three languages: Pala’wan (the language of a small forest
society), French and/or English (the languages of description, analysis and
translation), and a multimedia language, Dr. Revel shall present some
aspects of the Highlanders’ verbal arts revealing their genuine presence in
the world. At the crossroads of Social Sciences, Linguistics and Digital
Humanities, her presentation focuses on the interplay of various categories
allowing us to identify 10 distinct “genres”. Two illustrations on
DVD-roms shall follow, if time permits: K*ärang ät siburan* Jar Songs,
during feasts and celebration, together with *Basal,* Gongs Music; and
*Bisara, *Jural Discussions and *Burak ät Bäräs, *Flowers of Speech, or
rhetorical devices.

*Dr. Nicole Revel*, a linguist-anthropologist, has made the study of the
indigenous knowledge and oral tradition of the Pala’wan people her
life-long pursuit. In the last 20 years, she has built up, in collaboration
with other scholars and knowledgeable persons, a multi-media archive of
epics and ballads from 15 different communities. The digitized archive is
housed at the Rizal Library, Ateneo de Manila University and safeguarded at
the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. In 2009, Dr. Revel was
conferred Doctor of Humanities, *honoris causa*, by the Ateneo de Manila

Dean, School of Humanities
