*Abstract*

In 1988, the Philippine Government ratified and began to implement the
Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP). Soon after, cases surfaced of
Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) entering contractual arrangements with
agribusiness firms, both local and multinational. These arrangements range
from lease agreements to exclusive growership contracts. State actors have
dubbed these arrangements Agribusiness Venture Agreements (AVAs), and have
made attempts to regulate the types of contracts that ARBs enter. The
presentation is based on a field investigation conducted by Mr. Rosete
among ARBs in the Southern Mindanao Region. Individual interviews and focus
group discussions indicate that information manipulation, costs of
production, and belief in the effectiveness of collective action ex-ante
are strong determinants of the types of contracts that ARBs enter, and the
resulting payoffs that these contracts generate. He also found evidence of
what has been dubbed as adverse incorporation across differing contract
types. He will then present a simple game theoretic model in order to give
some intuition as to what types of interventions are viable in ensuring ARB
welfare.
