This dissertation addresses critical issues regarding the literary canon
and canon formation in disciplinal and pedagogical terms. By focusing on
the distinguished modern Chinese writer Lu Xun, the study surveys the
history of inclusion /exclusion of Lu Xun’s works in the Middle and High
School Chinese textbooks in China from the 1920s to 2013 in order to argue
that the process of canon formation and Lu Xun’s canonicity in Chinese
literature has been marked by its uses as cultural capital for which his
works have been historically deployed. Such use and canonicity have been
inextricably linked to the political history of China and the ideological
role of the state through the colonial and post-colonial periods as shown
by the analysis of key works by Lu Xun in relation to the textbooks.
Following the theoretical elaborations of Pierre Bourdieu, Guillory, and
Barbara Herrnstein-Smith, the study has tried to show how issues of
value/evaluation in the development of the canon and the process of canon
formation have been deeply rooted in the concrete specificities of the
institutional, social, cultural, political and historical realities in

The dissertation defense is open to the public.
