*What works? Scaling up social change initiatives*

17 April 2015, Friday, 9:00 am-5:15 pm

Escaler Hall, Ateneo de Manila University

The Office of the Vice President for Social Development and the Institute
of Philippine Culture of the Ateneo de Manila University cordially invite
the university community to a conference that gathers together social
change agents – practitioners, policymakers, leaders and members of
disadvantaged communities, scholars, and students – to discuss a
perspective on “what works” in efforts to help people move out of poverty
and bridge social inequalities, and on “how to scale up” what has worked so
far. The idea of “scaling up” is of pivotal importance to link “what
works” and the challenges of institutionalization.

This conference builds on an earlier study conducted by the IPC Research
Group on Social Change in 2008-2010 that examined the work of Ateneo de
Manila University in bridging the poverty gap through selected initiatives
in public basic education, local governance, and social entrepreneurship.
The study highlighted social change as an outcome of two engagements:
making existing government institutions fulfill their functions, and
enabling different groups to interact with one another in new ways. The
April 17 conference further examines the iterations of these engagements,
this time locating these within the question of how to think
institutionally and in longer timeframes.

Culture at 426-6067 loc. 206 or 213, or at whatworks.socialchange at gmail.com
