*Abstract*

This is the title of a book by Courant and Robbins (1941). The last two
chapters were on calculus. Calculus at the time was the palace of modern
mathematics. Now it is only the gateway to the palace. The speaker will
introduce some of the mathematics now in the palace and why they are there.
To name a few, they are Fourier series, Hilbert spaces, wavelets, and
stochastic analysis. The latest is big data, which is outside the palace.

*About the Speaker*

Professor Lee Peng Yee has been in collaboration with many Filipino
mathematicians and mathematics educators in the Philippines for over 40
years already. He has also advised the dissertations of many Filipinos.
Professor Lee was also a founding member and one of the past presidents of
the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society.
