In 1902, the publicist, folklorist, historian, political activist and
religious rebel Isabelo de los Reyes y Florentino (1864–1938) proclaimed
the establishment of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) and named the
Filipino priest Gregorio Aglipay (1860–1940) as its first archbishop. While
the history of this “religious revolution” has been told in much detail,
existing studies do not focus on the early periodicals published by the IFI
in the years 1903 and 1904. Apart from serving as the official organs of
the church, publishing important documents (the church’s constitution,
pastoral letters, organisational structure) and voicing its concerns to the
Philippine public, these periodicals also provided a way of establishing
the new Filipino national church as part of a global Christian community.

An examination of the periodicals makes it possible to situate the Iglesia
Filipina Independiente in a developing transregional network of contacts
between independently minded and already institutionally independent
Catholics. As can be gleaned from the journals as well as from letters
exchanged between the IFI and independent Catholics in diverse locations
such as Goa, Ceylon, and Switzerland, the IFI journals *La Verdad* (1903)
and *La Iglesia Filipina Independiente: Revista Catolica* (1903/04) served
as important media of communication for the young church and found their
way not only to Ceylon, but also to Switzerland and other regions of the
globe. In attempting to reconstruct some of these early encounters between
independent Catholic groups in different metropolitan and colonial
contexts, this presentation analyzes an important aspect of
indigenous-Christian non-missionary contacts in the colonial world and
points to the emergence of what could be termed an ‘indigenous- Christian
public sphere.’
