The research examines makeup practices or "face work" in terms of its
transformative impact on the lives of female retail sales personnel,
locally known as "salesladies". Because they often have limited education,
salesladies use makeup as part of a regimen to transform the gendered body
as viable capital to make a living in the retail industry and to
pursue their social and cultural mobility projects. This ethnographic
research draws on Sherry Ortner’s Practice Approach to demonstrate how
culture, interacting with agency, operates as a system of strategies for
economic security.
