is inviting everyone to a lecture on

Giorgio Agamben on Exclusion and Extermination

by Fr. Georges de Schrijver, SJ

Professor Emeritus, Catholic University of Leuven

27 August 2014

6:00-9:00 p.m.

Social Science Building

Conference Rooms 1 & 2

Giorgio Agamben (°1940) is a politically engaged Heideggerian. As
vehemently as Heidegger, he denounces the age-long influence of
onto-theology on Western thought. But whereas Heidegger only called
attention to the ensuing dominance of technology holding sway over our
lives, Agamben’s focus is on the devastating effect of sovereign power.
Sovereign political power does not hesitate to reduce its citizens to
outlaws that can be killed with impunity. For him, the symbol of modernity
is the concentration camp, and not as Michel Foucault would have it, the
asylum.

The lecture is open to the public.
