cordially invite you to

"Filipino transnational migration, diaspora and religion: swerte, malas and
kapalaran among **Filipina domestic workers in Singapore"

by: Josefina Socorro Flores Tondo, PhD

Filipino migrant workers, mostly in the service and IT sectors, constitute
a significant part of Singapore's foreign work force and are visible in its
urban landscapes, especially Catholic churches and Lucky Plaza. The
presentation joins the Filipino transnational migration and diaspora
discourse by examining the cultural attachments influencing, encouraging
and supporting Filipino migration to Singapore. By presenting the
narratives of Filipina domestic workers in Singapore, it shall draw
attention to the cultural and religious notions that affect the migrant
exercise of agency and risk-taking. I propose that religion, through folk
Catholic Christian cosmology, is enmeshed in the migrants' exercise of
agency in transnational migration and settlement in the diaspora.
