Department of Biology Colloquium Series*

Escaler Hall, *25 September 2013 (Wednesday), 3:00-4:00 PM*

"*Recent advances in DNA based analysis in stream ecology: DNA taxonomy and
population genetics*"

Speaker: *Dr. Kozo Watanabe*, Ehime University, Matsuyama, Japan

Dr. Kozo Watanabe, Assoc. Prof. at the Ehime University, Japan, presents
recent research trends in evolutionary studies of stream insects. One topic
is DNA taxonomy of Chironomidae (Diptera) that are usually neglected in
ecological research because of time constraint and the expertise required
for morphological identification. In order to discover true species
diversity in the European Alps, he used recently developed DNA based
techniques that employ coalescent-based models to identify species
boundaries. Another focus is genetic inference of evolutionary history of
stream caddisfly *Stenopsyche marmorata*. DNA sequence data were widely
collected throughout Japan and East Asia. The potential effects of
different evolutionary histories of populations occurring at the continent
scale on current pattern of local adaptation are discussed.
