September 12, 2013 (Thursday); 1:30 to 5pm at Leong Hall

We have invited Mr. Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan (WWF) as main speaker to provide
inputs on this important topic, together with three reactors: Dr. Danilo
Israel (PIDS), Mr. Bonar Laureto (PBE), and Mr. John Leo Algo (ESS).

We live in the “anthropocene”. This is a period in which human actions
play a major role in shaping the biosphere and its processes. Physical
processes can no longer be examined in isolation. Human processes have
become the dominant driver.

Environmental conservation is not preservation. Neither is it mere
protection. Conservation is defined as sustainable use. To get a handle
on how well we are striking a balance between the management of natural
resources and economic development, we should consider both the rate at
which society is managing/consuming natural capital and juxtapose that
against common indicators of economic growth, as well as the scale of the
human footprint.

· Mr. Lory Tan serves both as the CEO and Vice-Chairman of
the Board of Trustees of WWF Philippines. Concurrently, he also serves as a

Canada (1997).

· Mr. Bonar Laureto is the Executive Director of Philippine
