cordially invites you to

"Indigenous Knowledge Management: Response to Floods and Tsunamis in
Bangladesh"

Prof. Shahed Hassan
University of Dhaka

Abstract:
Based on field data collected from Bangladesh, Japan and the USA, the
presentation highlights the local perception, prediction and coping
strategies of people affected by natural disasters. It further shows
how the set of disaster management knowledge has been generated while
living in close contact with nature and transmitted from one
generation to the next, through oral tradition. Regarding typhoons
(as called in the Pacific, cyclone in the Bay of Bengal and Hurricane
in the Atlantic coast) certain predictive indicators are similar,
regardless of regional differences. Data has been collected from the
frequently affected northeastern parts of Japan. In both calamities,
biotic and abiotic indicators used by the people are revealed and
presented in a matrix. The presentation is expected to enlighten the
academic and program personnel to understand the importance of
indigenous knowledge for all practical purposes.
