"Violence Against Women in Intimate Relationships"
Speaker: Atty. Evalyn Ursua

According to the 2012 Gender Gap Index by the World Economic Forum,
the Philippines ranks 8th out of 135 countries in terms of addressing
gender disparity. Ironically, in 2011 alone, there were 12,948
reported cases of violence against women, most salient of which are
cases of physical violence, rape and defilements of RA 9262 (or the
Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004). Violence
within intimate relationships is a public crime, under the provisions
of RA 9262, yet despite the fact that there are laws seeking to
address violence against women, there seems to be a disconnect with
regard to people's awareness of these laws. On one hand, people are
conscious that these cases of violence are prevalent, yet not many are
aware of the extent through which these cases occur within intimate
relationships.

To commemorate this year's Women's Day, the Department of Sociology
and Anthropology will be hosting a forum on the provisions of R.A.
9262, which addresses crimes of abuse to women in intimate
relationships "committed by any person who commits any of the
following acts against a woman who is his wife or former wife, his/her
live-in partner or former live-in partner, or against a woman with
whom the person has or had a sexual or dating relationship." The aim
of the lecture is to discuss the particular vulnerability of women to
violence within intimate relationships, and the legal action they can
take, most especially those that happen within the boundaries of the
university. In addition, we aim to strengthen the struggle of women
against violence, and empower them to not tolerate when these advances
are made against them, and to let women know the power of saying "no"
as a fundamental right.
