A group of dozens of data crunchers helped U.S. President Obama win a
second term. According to his campaign manager Jim Messina they
measured every single thing in the campaign. They created a megafile
that didn't just tell the campaign how to find voters and get their
attention but it also allowed the number crunchers to run tests
predicting which types of people would be persuaded by certain kinds
of appeals.

According to McKinsey Global Institute, analyzing large data sets will
become a key basis of competition, underpinning new waves of
productivity growth, innovation, and consumer surplus. The United
States alone faces a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with
analytical expertise and 1.5 million managers and analysts with the
skills to understand and make decisions based on the analysis of big

Jonathan Wai in the February issue of Psychology Today asked where are
those 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical expertise coming
from? He answered his question, by saying that ?one interpretation of
deep analytical expertise is simply extremely high mathematical
ability. So the people who are most likely going to fill those jobs
will probably be students who excel at mathematics.?
