Patungo sa iyo sa yugtong ito pagkaraan ng lahat
ng ating nagawa para at laban sa isa't isa,
sa kabila ng ating nalamang kaya nating gawin
sa kapwa, hinihingi sa iyo muli
ang magsimula.
           -Allan Popa, "Basta"

YOU ARE WARMLY INVITED to the launch of BASTA by Allan Popa, and NARCISSUS
by Mark Cayanan, on THursday, July 26, 430 pm, at the Ateneo Press bookshop
at Bellarmine Hall. Allan has just returned from an MFA fellowship at
the Washington University at St. Louis and is back at the Ateneo's
Department of Filipino teaching creative writing and literature. Mark is on
leave from the Department of English and is finishing his MFA at the
University of Wisconsin in Madison. Both poets will read from their books
during the program. We hope to see you!

The day discards night like a used
                                                                     I had
taken to my face, but the day
had eased you out of it.
What do you see
when the neon lights
                                             the onslaught of morning:

to go back to your own
history: the present as it has to be concealed:
the leak in the ceiling, the mounting guttural
of the outside replaced by the TV then the hum
of your own sleep in which you are reminded

in a dream, of course, as all reminders were:
You were some other. Not this....
