The notion of a groupoid is an extension of that of groups-one may
think of a groupoid as a group with many identities. It was introduced
by Brandt in his 1926 paper but, in latter part of the last century,
it had been removed from the mathematical mainstream and, even to this
day, neglected in most mathematics courses.

The main aim of this talk is to introduce the concept of groupoids and
illustrate how they give more flexibility in describing symmetry. We
will also look at how groupoid theory recently gained popularity
through its application in biology, particularly, its relevance to
network dynamics in biological systems.
