In this public lecture, Jonathan Corpus Ong offers a critique of the
representation of sufferers and donors in Philippine television and
humanitarian communication. Comparing and contrasting Gawad Kalinga
videos with the recent Philippine Red Cross celebrity appeals as well
as television network charity and entertainment communication, this
paper analyzes how different moral invitations position viewers to
think, feel and act about suffering in multiple ways. He argues that
global trends in humanitarian communication as well as local "class
moralities" inform the production and reception of these images. Using
the concept of witnessing, he suggests that viewers' and donors'
skepticism towards the authenticity of sufferers are worked through in
the interplay between their class positions, personal experiences and
their mediated encounter with the suffering other.
