No court holiday on impeachment day: Marquez (ABS-CBNNews.com )


"MANILA, Philippines - Supreme Court spokesman Jose Midas Marquez on Monday assured the public that there will be no court holiday on the first day of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.


Nevertheless, Marquez said the Supreme Court is leaving it up to lower court judges and personnel if they will show their support for the embattled chief magistrate during today's ceremonies in Padre Faura.


"Nasa sa kanila yun kung dadalo sila. Hindi naman tayo nagbigay ng utos na mag-court holiday o magsarado ang mga korte so iniwan namin 'yan sa mga huwes kung sila ba ay dadalo dito upang magpakita ng kanilang suporta, magmisa at makinig sa ating punong mahistrado," Marquez said in an interview on Umagang Kay Ganda.


The SC spokesman also appealed to the public to study carefully the impeachment proceedings.

"Ito pong impeachment case na ito ay haharapin ng ating punong mahistrado, so kami po ay nananawagan sa publiko na pakinggan po natin ang lahat ng argumento dito, at talagang intidihin natin ang nangyayari para maunawaan natin kung ano talaga ang nangyayari sa ating kasaysaysan," he said."


Corona quiet after 1st trial day (ABS-CBN News)


"MANILA, Philippines - Chief Justice Renato Corona kept mum after his impeachment trial adjourned on the first day.


After the presiding officer Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile banged the gavel, Corona exited through the door designated for senators. With him was his wife Tina and Court Administrator Midas Marquez.


He proceeded to the Senate's Office of the Deputy Secretary for Legislation for an unknown activity inside the room.


When he came out, a barrage of questions from the media were thrown at him, but Corona refused to utter even a single word."


Impeachment court junks motion to cite prosecution in contempt (INQUIRER.net )


"MANILA, Philippines - A motion to cite for contempt members of the prosecution team during the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona has been denied by the Senate, acting as an impeachment court.

Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile, who was presiding over the trial on Monday, said the lawyer, Fernando Perito, has  no role in the  impeachment of  Corona because he was neither lawyer for the defense nor the prosecution."


Corona's preliminary hearing request denied (ABS-CBNnews.com)


"MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - Senator-judges denied on Monday Chief Justice Renato Corona's request for a preliminary hearing.


This means that the members of the defense panel will not be able to present evidence to prove their claim that the impeachment complaint is defective and should be dismissed outright.

Presiding Judge and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said he is allowing the trial to proceed with the main allegations of the prosecution.


Corona's lead counsel, Serafin Cuevas, reiterated their request for preliminary hearing, and denied this was intended to delay the proceedings.


"We are not delaying the proceedings.we are just asserting our right to due process which is in accordance with the Constitution," he said."

" Malacañang on Monday said impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona has no one else to blame but himself for the plight he is facing, and dismissed his accusation of conspiracy as a diversionary tactic.
In a press statement, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said Corona's "conspiracy theory ignores reality and plain facts." He was referring to Corona's accusation that three personalities are out to oust him as chief justice.
Corona made the accusation in a speech delivered before his supporters at the Supreme Court on Monday morning. He did not identify those he alleged to be plotting to remove him from office, and gave only hints.
"Malaki akong hadlang sa mga nagnanais na hindi maipamahagi ang lupain sa Hacienda Luisita. Malaki din akong hadlang sa nagmamadaling maging bise-presidente ngunit talo noong 2010. "MANILA, Philippines - Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Mar Roxas responded to Chief Justice Renato Corona tirade against him, saying the head of the judiciary should stop creating fallacies that would veer the public's attention away from his impeachment trial.


"Sa halip na mag-imbento ng storya at gumawa ng kwento, dapat sagutin na lang ni Mr. Corona ang mga isyu sa impeachment trial," Roxas said.


"This trial is about the very serious offenses against our people for betrayal of public trust, ang pagtataksil sa bayan. Huwag na yang mag-ponensya ng mga kwentong komiks at mga kathang-isip na conspiracy kuno. Harapin nya ang katotohanan at kanyang konsensya. Huwag na syang mandamay ng kung sinu-sino pa," he added."
