You are warmly invited to the Manila launch of MARGOSATUBIG, a translation
into English by Dr. Cecilia Locsin-Nava of Ramon Muzones's most famous
novel of the same title, on Friday, August 17, 430 pm, at the ALIWW Reading
Room and Gallery, Rizal Library Special Collections Bldg., Ateneo de Manila
University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City.

Margosatubig, also a present-day municipality of Zamboanga del Sur, is
the setting of Muzones's serial novel of a fictive Muslim state in
Mindanao. It first appeared in the pages of the popular Hiligaynon
magazine *Yuhum *in the mid-1940s. Showing himself a master of narrative
invention, Muzones wrote a novel in "30 installments that unfold a wealth
of precolonial lore that blended romance, adventure, fantasy, subtle
eroticism, and geographic information that so fascinated magazine readers
and made *Yuhum*'s weekly circulation jump" from a lowly 2,500 to
five-digit figures.

Calling the novel a "literary treasure," National Artist Bienvenido
Lumbera considers Dr. Nava's version "a wonder-work of an English
translation, literate and literary, rare and readable."

In his foreword to the book, National Artist Virgilio Almario lauds and
supports the efforts of a critic like Dr. Nava who "works hard to
understand her region as cultural milieu, as context, to fully situate the
significance of Muzones as a writer."

Dr. Nava, formerly professor at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod,
first brought critical attention to Hiligaynon literature through her
award-winning *History and Society in the Novels of Ramon Muzones* (2001).
She continues to turn her scholarly eye on the artistic traditions of West
Visayas and spend time in assiduous translation work to bring out more of
Muzones's vast body of work for the reading enjoyment of the general
public.

MARGOSATUBIG will be sold at a launch price of 485 pesos (regular price 540
pesos). Please email unipress at admu.edu.ph or call 02-4265984 to reserve
copies, ask for directions to the launch venue, or send an RSVP.

We hope to see you there. Salamat gid!
