institution established in 1865, by the Jesuit mission in the  
Philippines.  By then, it was already engaged in pre-disaster science  
doing atmospheric studies, weather and earthquake observations until  
it became the official institution for weather forecasting and later,  
the Philippine Weather Bureau.  At the turn of the 21st century, the  
Institute finds itself addressing new challenges on the global concern  
for environment and development.  With a continuing focus on  
pre-disaster science that impacts directly on man?s well being, MO  
undertakes research in the areas of climate change, urban air quality,  
and disaster risk reduction and management.

Project Title: AN INTEGRATED RISK ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTS OF  
TROPICAL CYCLONES IN METRO-MANILA: TROPICAL STORM ONDOY (KETSANA) AND  
FUTURE APPLICATIONS

Job Position: PROJECT RESEARCH ASSISTANT FOR LAND USE/ LAND COVER ANALYSIS

Job Description:

Inventory and assessment of multi-date satellite imageries of Metro-Manila:
     Landsat TM (Metro-Manila and hinterlands)
     SPOT
     JAXA ALOS (ANIR-2, PRISM, PALSAR)
Research, develop and implement appropriate image processing methodology
Process, analyze, and photointerpret multi-date satellite imageries  
covering Metro-Manila
Research and test algorithms for the detection of land use/ cover patterns
Classify land use/ cover using multi-date satellite imageries
Undertake change detection of satellite-based land use/ cover maps
Contribute to a draft report, including executive summary, findings,  
recommendations and annexes
Write a technical report, create a poster, and give a presentation on  
work on land cover analysis

Qualifications:

Preferably, a Bachelor of Science in  Architecture, Geography,  
Environmental Sciences, Environmental Planning and Management, Human  
Ecology
Knowledge in Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Highly proficient in oral and written communication skills as well as  
statistical processing and analyses
At least three (3) to four (4) years of experience in development and  
physical planning and related research
Adequate computer skills e.g. word processing, spreadsheets, ENVI,  
ERMapper, IDRISI, ILWIS, ArcView/ ArcGIS, Manifold, AutoCad and  
Bentley Verticals (Geographics and Descartes) would be an advantage
Extensive exposure to GPS-aided field reconnaissance or ground verification
Strong people skills and a team player
Keen interest in environment, weather, climate and disaster risk  
reduction and management
