Asian news exhibit opens at Xavier U

"Asian News in Pictures," ACFJ?s first exhibit of news photography
opened Feb. 2 at Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, the exhibit?s
first stop in 2011.
Fr. Jose Ramon T. Villarin, SJ, XU president, led the ribbon-cutting
ceremony and, in a speech, pointed out the importance of
collaborations between the various Ateneo universities. In his
speech, Severino R. Sarmenta, Jr. chair of the Communication
Department of Ateneo de Manila, noted the value of pictures in the
reporting of news stories.
The exhibit at the XU?s School of Business Management building lobby
coincides with the university?s celebration of Social Consciousness
Month. From there the show will move on Feb. 20 to Level 2, East
Concourse of Limketkai Mall.
Dr. Hilly Ann Quiaoit, XU vice president for research and Shiela C.
Balbutin, chair of the Development Communication Department, are
coordinating the exhibit?s leg in Cagayan de Oro along with faculty
and staff of the ACFJ and the Department of Communication.
"Asian News in Pictures" features six photo essays and 25 single
pictures - all of them compelling news images of social and
development issues and events done by some of the most talented,
audacious and passionate among Asia's contemporary and upcoming
photojournalists. The pictures were culled from the works of students
of ACFJ's photojournalism programs, many of whom are among Asia's most
talented photojournalists.
Among them are Rogelio Luis Liwanag, until recently chief photographer
of Xinhua News Agency in Manila, VJ Villafranca, winner of 2008 Ian
Perry Award in Photojournalism, the PDI photographers: Emilyn Hope
Rillon, Remar Zamora and Rafael Lerma, and Rony Zakaria, the
Indonesian photographer who won in the 2010 National Press Photography
Awards.
