The Healing Power of Play
by Dr. Ma. Lourdes "Honey" Arellano-Carandang

Play is not only the child's natural medium of expression, but is also
essential to the child's normal, healthy, and total development. This
lecture discusses how play benefits the child--as well as the
adolescent and adult--physically, socially, emotionally,
intellectually, and morally. It goes on to discuss play as a form of
therapy, and describes the healing processes that take place during
play therapy through the author's own experiences and cases in her
many years of clinical practice with Filipino children and families.

Dr. Ma. Lourdes "Honey" Arellano-Carandang is a clinical psychologist,
former Professor at the Ateneo de Manila University and University of
the Philippines, and former Chair of the Psychology Department of the
Ateneo de Manila University. Dr. Carandang is known as the pioneer in
Family Therapy and Play Therapy in the Philippines, and in the last 3
decades has spearheaded numerous research and intervention projects
for children and families in difficult situations. She is the founding
Chair and former President of the Philippine Association of Child and
Play Therapy, and is the founder and President of the MLAC Institute
for Children and Families. The MLAC Institute uses the science of
Psychology for the well-being of Filipino children and families,
especially the disadvantaged and traumatized.

A best-selling author, Dr. Carandang has written 12 books to date,
including "Filipino Children Under Stress", "Self-Worth and the
Filipino Child", "The Path to Healing", "Nawala ang Ilaw ng Tahanan:
Case Studies of Families Left Behind by OFW Mothers", and her latest,
"The Magic of Play: Children Heal Through Play Therapy", which is
already in its second printing and the subject of her public lecture.

Dr. Carandang was honored as National Social Scientist in 1995 for her
outstanding contribution to the field of Psychology and for applying
scientific principles towards the upliftment of Filipino children and
families.
