Company Profile:  The Manila Observatory (MO) is a scientific research  
institution established in 1865, by the Jesuit mission in the  
Philippines.  By then, it was already engaged in pre-disaster science  
doing atmospheric studies, weather and earthquake observations until  
it became the official institution for weather forecasting and later,  
the Philippine Weather Bureau.  At the turn of the 21st century, the  
Institute finds itself addressing new challenges on the global concern  
for environment and development.  With a continuing focus on  
pre-disaster science that impacts directly on man?s well being, MO  
undertakes research in the areas of climate change, urban air quality,  
and disaster risk reduction and management.

Project Title:  COUNTRY SCOPING STUDIES TO BUILD EVIDENCE ON CHILDREN?S
                 VULNERABILITIES TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND DISASTER IMPACTS

Job Position:  PROJECT RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Job Description:

Gather, review and analyze information and secondary data relevant to:
-Historical and Projected Climate Hazard Scenarios by Province,  
particularly       Albay and Davao
-Exposure: Number of children and youth
-Children?s Vulnerability: Development, vulnerability and adaptive  
capacity with linkages to food security
Develop, record and maintain working database of literature of  
child-focused projects, studies and public and private partner  
activities
Analyze government strategies, policies and programmes, case studies  
and good practices/ lessons learned relating to climate change and  
children?s climate change adaptation
acilitate analyses of children?s vulnerability and their adaptive capacity
Identify data, knowledge and policy gaps as well as recommendations  
for targeted actions, including research to address these gaps
Assist in the development of research design/ framework,  methodology  
and tools for and conduct data and information collection in Albay and  
Davao
Prepare project reports, e.g. executive summary, findings,  
recommendations and annexes
Contribute to the preparation of an advocacy paper on children?s  
participation in climate change adaptation

Qualifications:

College graduate preferably in the fields of Sociology, Anthropology,  
Human Geography and Environmental Science
Experience in climate research and development planning
Adequate computer skills in word processing and spreadsheets
Proficient in oral and written communication skills
Good interpersonal skills and a team worker
Keen interest in environment, weather, and climate
