American Studies Association of the Philippines (ASAP), in cooperation
with Department of Political Science, of the Ateneo de Manila
University, cordially invites you to its annual conference, entitled,
?Exploring American Studies in the Philippines through
Interdisciplinary Lenses?. This will be on 13 Nov 2010, at the Escaler
Hall, SEC Bldg., Ateneo de Manila University.

Background and Conference Theme

American Studies have gone a long way since its inception in the 1940s
--- from the so-called ?myth-image-symbol? approach of studying
American culture to a more critical look into American society as
complicated by ethnicity, race, gender and transnational concerns; and
from using essentially literary and historical methods to the adoption
of other disciplinal perspectives such as anthropology, economics,
identity studies, media, political science, and sociology. In the
context of these developments, American Studies thus evolved into an
area of inquiry that sought to problematize pervading societal
conditions and discourses.

Would this be similar in the case of American Studies in the
Philippines? How has American Studies evolved and what is its current
state in the country? How can emerging topics on American culture,
identity politics, political discourses, and economics of everyday
lives be shared to teachers and students in the country?
