                      ?All children are artists.
    The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.?
                                     -  Pablo Picasso

For the School of Humanities, running an arts workshop (ArtsWork) is
one way of helping the youth today hone and nurture their creativity.
An SOH outreach program, ArtsWork is designed for junior high school
students who have shown great talent in different forms of art.

In this year?s launch, 29 students from Assumption-Makati, Ateneo de
Davao, Ateneo de Naga, De la Salle Zobel, Elizabeth Seton School,
Grace Christian College, Makati Hope Christian School, PAREF Rosehill,
PAREF Woodrose, St. Jude Catholic School, San Beda Alabang, Poveda,
St. Theresa?s Quezon City, UNO High School, and Xavier School have
been chosen from among 70 applicants from different schools in Metro
Manila and from other Jesuit schools. For three weeks (4-22 May 2009)
they get training in developing their creative writing skills (English
and Filipino) as well as in the performing arts under the lively
tutelage of accomplished artists mainly from among the faculty members
in the School of Humanities.

Under the supervision of Dr. Jerry Respeto, Chair of the Filipino
Department and himself a playwright, actor, and director, this program
is team-facilitated by Ms. Christine Bellen (playwright, poet, author
of best-selling picture books for children, including retellings of
"Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang ni Severino Reyes"; writer of the play
Batang Rizal) and Jethro Tenorio (actor and director for Tanghalang
Ateneo and Entablado and recipient of the Parangal Plumang Asul in
2006). Guest lecturers/workshop designers and facilitators include
Mr. Ariel Diccion (actor - Tangahalang Ateneo, Tanghalang Pilipino,
Entablado); Mr. Edgar Samar (poet and fictionist; Palanca awardee);
Mr. Yolando Jamendang Jr.(according to Krip Yuson "deliciously witty,
techno-narrative, stand-up poet;"); Mr. Glenn Mas - theater artist,
writer and 9-time winner of the Palanca Awards for Literature; and no
less than Professor. Salvador Bernal - National Artist for Theater
Design.

Some Alumni artists are also happy to be part of the team: Mr. Jean
Pierre Reniva (Loyola Schools Awardee for the Arts 2007 for Theater
Arts; actor, costume and theater designer for Tanghalang Ateneo;
awardee, 2002 LS Awards for the Arts); Kristian Mamforte (awardee for
creative writing: poetry;  Loyola Schools Awards for the Arts 2009);
Elisha Martinez (awardee for creative writing: fiction; Loyola Schools
Awards for the Arts 2009) among others.

The School of Humanities hopes through ArtsWork to inspire students to
discover magis in developing the richness of their artistic potential
and giving them great joy in their achievements in the presence of
supportive peers.
