MERON PHILOSOPHER: FR. ROQUE J. FERRIOLS, S.J.
by Dr. Leovino Ma. Garcia
Monday, 24 August 2009
4:30 to 6:00 PM
Natividad Galang Fajardo Conference Room
Ground Floor, Horacio de la Costa Hall, School of Humanities
Drawn from almost fifty years of friendship with him, this talk offers an
intimate portrait of the Jesuit, Roque J. Ferriols, the philosopher of Meron.
Convinced that the unique vision expressed in Fr. Ferriols?s philosophy is of
great significance to the world, this hopefully ?creative
repetition? in English strives to articulate the ?ever incomplete
saying of the unsayable that
needs nevertheless to be said but never exhaustibly? (?ang di masabi-sabi
nguni?t kailangang pa rin sabihin?)?the freshness and richness of Meron.
LEOVINO MA. GARCIA
a Ferriols A-1 student, finished his AB in Humanities at Ateneo de Manila and
obtained his Ph.D. from the Universite Catholique de Louvain.
Associate Professor of Philosophy, he was once Chair of the Philosophy
Department and became the first lay Dean of Ateneo?s School of Arts
and Sciences (1988-1994). He later also served as Dean of the School
in the Loyola Schools (2000-2007) with a sabbatical year in between. As a
philosopher, he has held the presidency of the Philosophical
Association of the
Philippines, the Asian Association of Catholic Philosophers, and
