Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The Graduate Degree Program for Asian Development Practitioners, a joint undertaking of the Ateneo de Manila University School of Social Sciences' Department of Sociology and Anthropology (DSA) and Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC), has over the past 20 years provided social science training that enables graduates to focus on people - their voices and outlooks, how they live, and what actions they take or want to take under varying circumstances. The training gives attention to the analysis and interpretation of contemporary issues, the more critical ones being the tension between globalization and national integration, the inequalities in access to power and resources among different groups, and the consequences of these structural forces on cultures and identities. The training also enables students to design and undertake social research through surveys, focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and participant observation.

The Program has already graduated 147 fellows from Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, who are now significant actors in development programs, especially through community-based research and participatory development processes.

On 2-4 April 2008, the DSA-IPC Program brings together in a conference - Southeast Asia Today: Development Paradigms, Reflexive Engagements - its alumni as well as colleagues and friends in the development and academic communities. About 30 alumni will present papers, focusing on such thematic areas as household and community asset building, social capital formation, state-civil society dynamics, local and regional networking, and social change and sustainable development. Alumni will serve as members of panel of reactors.

Participation in this regional conference is welcome from non-alumni, that is, those interested in the state of development work in the Region vis-à-vis the social sciences, as gleaned from the experiences and personal reflections of the DSA-IPC Program alumni.

Thank you!
