                A VENUE FOR CRITICAL THINKING AND ARGUMENTATION

*Description of the Talk*

This presentation will review the basics of argumentation and discuss the
elements of debating. It will show how debating may be used as a venue for
honing students critical thinking skills and for helping them learn the
science of argumentation. Ms. Kit Uychoco will focus on the Oregon-Oxford
format and Ms. Sharms Parmanand will describe the British Parliamentary
debate. It will include an open forum that will allow participants to clarify
points, exchange ideas, and share insights.

*About the Speakers*

KIT UYCHOCO was in the Executive Committee of the UP Debate Society and
competed in several local and international debate championships.  In the UP
Debate Society, she taught debate seminars and helped organize debate
championships for high schools in Sorsogon, La Union, and Baguio.  After
graduating from the University of the Philippines, she was one of the founding
members of the UP Alumni Debate Foundation, where she taught debate seminars
and organized debate championships for high schools in Valenzuela, Laguna,
Tagaytay, Batangas, La Union, and Ayala Alabang.

Currently, Kit teaches at the Department of English and the Ateneo Language
Learning Center (ALLC). She has used the venue of debate for the application
of critical thinking skills and argumentation for her English communication
course.  She has also used it to teach Advanced EFL students oral
communication skills.

SHARMS PARMANAND graduated cum laude from the Ateneo de Manila University in
2007 with an AB Political Science degree.  She has played an active role in
the Ateneo Debate Society (ADS), and she has been recognized for her
achievements in the world of debating. She has garnered the following titles:
3-time Asian Debate Champion, 4-time National Debate Champion, and 2-time Best
Speaker in the Philippines.

Sharms is a lecturer at the Ateneo English Department where she teaches
argumentative research paper writing. She is the Research Unit Head of the
Visayan Forum Foundation. She travels to different parts of the Philippines
and the world to participate in various debates and projects.
