Fr. Adolfo Nicolas Elected Superior General of the Jesuits


Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, S.J., President of the Jesuit Conference of East Asia and Oceania, was elected the 29th General of the Society of Jesus this morning in Rome. The choice of the General Congregation was approved by the Holy Father.

Fr. Nicolás, who will be 72 on 29 April, entered the Society of Jesus in Spain on 14 Sep 1953. Like former General Fr. Pedro Arrupe, he was sent as a missionary to Japan. Ordained in 1967, he did graduate studies at the Gregorian University in Rome and then taught Systematic Theology at Sophia University in Japan. From 1978 - 1984 he was Director of the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila, Philippines and then returned to Japan to become Rector of the Scholasticate. From 1993 to 1999 he served as Provincial of the Japanese Province. In 2004 Fr. Nicolás returned to Manila to become President of the JCEAO, coordinating cooperation between Jesuit Provinces from Japan to Australia, including missions in East Timor, Cambodia and Myanmar. He has had to address the great diversity of this region, along with the challenges and opportunities presented by a resurgent China.

1968-1971: Graduate studies in Sacred Theology, Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome
1971: Professor Systematic Theology, Sophia University in Tokyo
1978-1984: Director of the East Asian Pastoral Institute, Manila
1991-1993: Rector of the Scholasticate, Tokyo
1993-1999: Provincial of the Japanese Province
2004-2007: President of the Jesuit Conference of East Asia and Oceania  (headquarters on the 3rd Floor, Sonolux Building, Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City, Philippines)
