You are warmly invited to the launching of Alvin Yapan's award-winning novel
*Ang Sandali ng mga Mata,* on
Thursday, 29 November, 3 to 4.30 pm, at the SEC Escaler Hall, Ateneo de
Manila University, Loyola Heights,
Quezon City. The highlight of the launch is a lecture by the author, "Ang
Konsepto ng Espasyo sa Mahika ng Katutubong Panitikan." The launch is being
presented with the cooperation of the Department of Filipino of the Loyola
Schools and the Ateneo Institute for Literary Arts and Practices.
According to Prof. Ma. Lilia F. Realubit, the author in his novel "looks
through the characters in the folk stories of the past and the Bikol people
of the present [and...] uncovers what so long has been concealed about their
lives and deaths and changed them into more practical people." She cites his
use of a unique technique in storytelling: "The use of folk stories to
complete the action marks a striking technical innovation, blending past and
present while keeping the narrative moving into the future...Like the old
ways of storytelling, the reader has to infer from the description of events
and situations as Yapan runs together the time of the epic with contemporary
Perhaps it is his fearless and persistent forays into his art that have
earned for Prof. Yapan steady recognition for his efforts. He teaches at the
Department of Filipino of the Ateneo de Manila University, but at the same
time has been active and prolific in the literary scene. He has been a
fellow at several workshops, and has won prizes from the Palanca and the
National Commission on Culture and the Arts, among others. Most
ng mga Mata* won the 2006 National Book Award and the 2006 Juan C. Laya
Prize for Best Novel.
