(UPDATE) Roxas II elected LP president (INQUIRER.net)
SAN JUAN, Philippines -- Senator Manuel "Mar" Roxas II promised to lead the Liberal Party to "victory in 2010" after he was unanimously elected to a three-year term as party president starting November 30 and given "blanket authority to appoint its officers and reorganize the party."
"We shall build a strong, united, and modern LP -- rooted in its founding principles, sharpening its purpose -- and lead it to victory in 2010," Roxas said in his acceptance speech.
The new LP president promised to address the "assaults to our democracy and freedoms," particularly the extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances that have been sweeping the ranks of activists over the last six years, as he compared the term so far of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to the "long night of the dictator" Ferdinand Marcos.
